Bruno Henrique defense appeal reaches STJ minister as criminal case over alleged betting-fraud scheme advances in Brazil

Bruno Henrique remains under criminal scrutiny in Brazil over an alleged plan to force a yellow card to benefit bettors in 2023. For high-risk payment and betting operators, the important bit is not the football drama; it is that three bookmakers flagged abnormal card-betting volume, and that alert helped push the case into the hands of federal investigators and prosecutors.

1. The defense appeal has now reached Joel Ilan Paciornik, a minister at Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice (STJ). He will review the filing and may allow the case to move forward in the Federal District Justice system, where it is already being handled by the Tribunal of Justice of the Federal District and Territories (TJDFT).
2. Bruno Henrique was already convicted in sports court in November last year. His initial 12-match suspension was ultimately converted into a R$ 100,000 fine on appeal, but the criminal case did not stop there: the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT) also charged him in ordinary court with estelionato, or fraud.
3. The investigation began in November 2024, after the Federal Police and prosecutors examined suspicious betting activity. According to the case file, three betting houses detected abnormal volume and movement on card markets linked to the Flamengo forward in that match.
4. The criminal case also reaches beyond the player. Authorities in the Federal District are looking at his brother, Wander Nunes Pinto Júnior; his sister-in-law, Ludymilla Araújo Lima; his cousin, Poliana Ester Nunes Cardoso; and five other people: Andryl Sales Nascimento dos Reis, Claudinei Vitor Mosquete Bassan, Henrique Mosquete do Nascimento, Rafaela Cristina Elias Bassan, and Max Evangelista Amorim.
5. The underlying match was Flamengo vs Santos in the 31st round of the 2023 Brasileirão at Mané Garrincha in Brasília. Bruno Henrique was booked late in the second half, then shown a red card after protesting, and Santos won 2-1. The sequence is the basis of the allegation that he intentionally sought a booking that could be monetized by bettors.
