Binance wallets lost billions of dollars in assets as the market sold off

Binance wallets lost billions of dollars in assets as the market sold off

Binance’s wallets reportedly lost several billion dollars in assets in less than an hour on October 30, 2026, and the outflows were still continuing as clients and partners kept moving funds. For high-risk PSPs and crypto merchants, the only number that really matters here is not the headline loss — it is whether this turns into a custody, settlement, or counterparty event.

  1. The move that started it all was a transfer of $2.53 billion in roughly 60 different tokens from a Binance wallet to a wallet linked to Tornado Cash, the mixer that tends to set off alarms for anyone watching blockchain flows.
  2. The first report came from an anonymous analyst using the handle Spreek, who initially suggested the movement could have been routine treasury activity. Spreek later posted that assets from an Ethereum wallet associated with Binance had been sent to a newly created address, and then clarified that wallets linked to the suspicious transfers had started rapidly selling USDT stablecoins through decentralized exchanges.
  3. Binance responded 43 minutes after Spreek’s post. Majority owner Changpeng Zhao wrote: “It looks like Binance was hacked.” He told his 13 million followers that client funds were safe and thanked Tether and Circle for the “quick freeze” of 971 million USDT and 823 USDC that had been withdrawn from the exchange and moved by unknown parties.
  4. A Binance representative told Cointelegraph that the exchange was investigating reports of a potential security issue, but did not confirm whether client funds were affected.

The practical issue for payment and crypto infrastructure teams is simple: when a major exchange starts seeing large wallet movements, freezes, and DEX liquidations in the same news cycle, the risk is not just exchange-side. It becomes a liquidity and counterparty question for everyone settling against that venue.
