UK Gambling Commission suspends BresBet and Bet St George licences over suspected AML and social responsibility failings

The British Gambling Commission has suspended the operating licences of BresBet Ltd and Bet St George Ltd while it carries out a section 116 review under the Gambling Act 2005. For PSPs and other high-risk payment partners, the important part is simple: both brands can still let customers log in and withdraw funds, but the licences are under review and the regulator has flagged suspected anti-money laundering and social responsibility issues.

1. The Commission said the suspension was based on enquiries that uncovered suspected regulatory failings, specifically in social responsibility and anti-money laundering. The review is being conducted under section 116 of the Gambling Act 2005, and the suspension will stay in place until the regulator is satisfied the businesses are compliant.
2. The order takes effect immediately, but it does not stop either operator from allowing consumers to access their accounts and withdraw funds. The Commission also said both businesses can still be contacted through their websites, and it told them to treat consumers fairly and keep them informed about developments affecting them.
3. BresBet Ltd runs bresbet.com. The brand launched in 2021 and is known for horse and greyhound racing betting. It also sponsors events across those sports and is the lead sponsor at trainer Fergal O’Brien’s stable in Gloucestershire.
4. Bet St George Ltd operates betstgeorge.com. It entered the UK gambling market in March this year and was positioned around English sporting identity, with a planned focus on England-related markets and tailored promotions. The operator also said it would offer a full sportsbook and casino, with a strong emphasis on football and the FIFA World Cup, and it launched in time for the 2026 Cheltenham Festival.
5. Both operators are chaired by Nic Brereton, whose LinkedIn profile lists previous roles as chairman of Brilliant Auctions and advisor to BresMed. In a post on X, BresBet said it was temporarily unavailable following the suspension and that it was working through the matter.
