Google investigates fake casino apps in Play Store Early Access after Bitdefender report

Google is looking into a set of Early Access apps flagged by Bitdefender, including fake casino and reward titles that cannot be publicly rated or reviewed while they sit in the programme. For PSPs and operators, the point is simple: app-store screening is not just a consumer-trust issue; it is part of the fraud and brand-risk surface around gaming-style traffic.

Bitdefender said its analysis of Google Play apps installed by its users found “thousands of Early Access applications that appear to include fake casino games and reward apps, as well as titles that may infringe on third-party trademarks and potentially misleading utilities.” Google is now investigating the report.
2. Early Access lets developers publish unfinished apps to collect feedback before full release. While an app remains in the programme, public star ratings and reviews are not shown, which Bitdefender said “removes one of Google Play’s most important trust signals.”
3. Cybernews reported that some of the apps flagged by Bitdefender had hundreds of thousands of installs, and that one potentially deceptive game had more than 1m downloads. That matters because scale changes the problem from nuisance to distribution channel.
4. Bitdefender said many of the listings were promoted on TikTok and Facebook with misleading ads, including videos using AI-generated celebrity deepfakes and offers such as “250 spins for free”. The funnel is familiar: attention grab, fake reward promise, then monetisation on the back end.

According to the report, many apps promise cash rewards, PayPal payouts, cryptocurrency earnings, gift cards, free spins or casino jackpots, then serve advertisements and slow progress as users approach withdrawal thresholds. The titles often resemble casual slot or puzzle games, and some used trademark-related names without permission, including “Grand Theft Auto V (Early Access)”. Bitdefender said some developers upload multiple similar titles.
