Blue House holds emergency financial-sector hacking meeting after incidents at Bithumb, Daishin Securities, and Mirae Asset Global Investments
The Blue House Office of National Security convened an “emergency review meeting on financial-sector chain hacking response” on October 28 after hacking incidents hit virtual asset exchange Bithumb, Daishin Securities, and Mirae Asset Global Investments. For PSPs and other payment providers, the important bit is not the headline risk alone, but the secondary damage: leaked data can turn into voice phishing and other fraud fast.
- The meeting was chaired by Third Deputy Song Gi-ho and focused on the progress of investigations and response measures tied to the three incidents. The Office of National Security also discussed ways to prevent secondary damage, especially voice phishing that uses leaked information.
- The government urged the public to watch for phone calls and text messages impersonating financial companies. That matters operationally because the next stage after a breach is often social engineering, not just the original intrusion.
- Song Gi-ho said financial-sector hacking is directly tied to people’s assets and trust in finance, and called for swift response and blocking of secondary damage. He also specifically said security should be strengthened so that places with insufficient security capacity, such as small and midsize financial companies, do not become blind spots.
- Bithumb said the previous day that personal information had been leaked through an abnormal route from its in-house mobile groupware system. So far, only employee information is known to have been leaked.
- Mirae Asset Global Investments said it detected signs of abnormal access from external internet protocol (IP) addresses to some web systems and activated an emergency response system.
