Open Standard formalizes governance and names founding partners as OpenUSD takes shape

Open Standard, the stablecoin consortium first announced in June, has now put actual structure around the thing: governance, founding partners, and leadership. For PSPs, banks, and high-risk operators, the important bit is not the press-release choreography — it is the distribution network and the shared-economics model that could make OpenUSD a real payments rail, not just another token with a logo.

  1. Open Standard says it now has more than 140 partners across banking, payments, fintech, and crypto, and it is preparing to issue OpenUSD later this year. The formalization covers the initiative’s governance structure, founding partners, and leadership.
  2. Coinbase, Mastercard, Shopify, Stripe and Visa were named founding partners. Those partners will invest more than $1 billion to establish OpenUSD supply, with a “limited number” of additional founding partners to be named later.
  3. Among the banks signed on to participate in OpenUSD are BNY, U.S. Bank, Huntington Bank, Citizens Bank, Cross River, The Bancorp, Pathward, and Lead Bank. PayPal, American Express, Chime, Adyen, Klarna and Affirm are also involved.
  4. The model matters because participants can earn equity based on the volume of activity they drive on the network. In other words, the economics are tied to distribution and usage, which is exactly why analysts are treating this as a competitive threat to existing stablecoin issuers.
  5. Zach Abrams, co-founder of Stripe-owned Bridge and interim CEO of Open Standard, will transition to full-time CEO. He said Open Standard is looking at use cases including settlement, institutional trading, corporate treasury, and fintech and neobank infrastructure.

Vasundhara Govil, an analyst at Keefe Bruyette and Woods, said the update increases Open Standard’s competitive relevance among stablecoin issuers and pointed to Coinbase as USDC’s largest distribution channel. That is the part to watch: if OpenUSD gets broad partner support and real distribution, it stops being a side project and starts looking like infrastructure.
