SS Lazio ends Polymarket sponsorship after Italian regulator blocks prediction markets

Italian Serie A club SS Lazio and Polymarket have mutually terminated their sponsorship deal after Italian authorities moved against prediction markets. For high-risk payment providers, the useful bit is simple: if a product gets blocked at the regulatory level, the commercial agreements built around it can unwind fast.

  1. SS Lazio said the termination was agreed “consensually” and “in a spirit of mutual cooperation” after “new provisions adopted by the competent authorities” changed the regulatory framework. The club did not frame this as a dispute; it framed it as a regulatory reset.
  2. Polymarket was named by the Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM) as a prohibited site on 10 July and, according to local reporting, became inaccessible to Italian players from 27 July.
  3. The sponsorship deal was signed in April and had been set to run until the 2027/28 season. As part of the original arrangement, Polymarket was both Lazio’s official sponsor and its “Fan Intelligence & Digital Insight Partner”.
  4. Lazio’s initial announcement valued the deal at more than $22 million, plus additional “performance and activation-based bonuses”. Under the settlement, Polymarket committed to paying the full amount originally agreed for the 2026/27 season.
  5. Italy already banned gambling-based sponsorships in 2018 alongside gambling advertising. The country is also part of a nine-regulator consortium that launched a crackdown on prediction market platforms in June, while Spain, Czechia and France have also blocked Polymarket for not meeting various gambling regulations.

The FIGC has already called on the government to rethink the 2018 ban under the “Decreto Dignità”, arguing that it has cut sponsorship income for clubs and left Italian football at a disadvantage versus other top European leagues. For PSPs and acquirers, the signal is familiar: in this vertical, the regulatory view of the product can matter more than the commercial story attached to it.
