Australia suspends Cryptolink’s Bitcoin ATM registration for three months over AML reporting failures

Australia’s anti-money laundering watchdog has suspended Cryptolink’s Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) registration for three months, which means its Bitcoin ATMs cannot operate during that period. For PSPs and high-risk operators, the message is blunt: threshold reporting and basic responsiveness to the regulator are not optional admin.

  1. AUSTRAC CEO Brendan Thomas said Monday that Cryptolink’s registration was suspended starting Sunday for three months, citing “ongoing concerns” about compliance with anti-money laundering obligations. AUSTRAC said the company failed to meet basic reporting requirements, especially threshold transaction reports, and did not respond to AUSTRAC’s request for information.
  2. The action follows an enforceable undertaking Cryptolink entered into with AUSTRAC in October 2025, after the regulator’s Cryptocurrency Taskforce identified alleged breaches including late transaction reporting and shortcomings in Cryptolink’s risk assessments. AUSTRAC also issued a $56,340 infringement notice, which Cryptolink paid.
  3. Thomas said AUSTRAC has “ongoing concerns” about the company’s ability to manage high-risk transactions through its CATMs, framing digital currency as a money laundering risk the agency is still actively policing.
  4. Cryptolink has 96 ATMs in Australia, where it lets customers exchange cash for Bitcoin. Most of those ATMs are in major cities including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
  5. Australia has the highest number of crypto ATMs of any country in the Asia-Pacific region, and authorities have been cracking down on the criminal use of crypto ATMs since at least late 2024. That makes this a local enforcement story with direct relevance for any payment or cash-in/cash-out business touching digital assets in Australia.
